by

To deal with today security challenges Above all, the strong commitment of all member states to the vision and principles of the Alliance and the contribution of all are needed to consolidate a stable and secure international environment free from any revisionism.

We must all do it together, otherwise it is not possible, and we must do it better than ever, said, among other things, the Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos speaking at the Spring Meeting of the Standing Committee of its Parliamentary Assembly NATO held in Athens.

“In the Ukrainian crisis, the limits of international law, the validity of treaties, geopolitical stability in Europe, the global energy balance and even the very right of states to be free are at stake,” he said.

“Greece,” he added, “immediately responded to Ukraine’s request by showing practical solidarity with the suffering Ukrainian people from the outset by providing defense equipment, medical supplies and significant humanitarian assistance.” “At this stage, with the Ukrainian crisis in progress, our country supports the Alliance to maintain full readiness in order to assist in defending the Euro-Atlantic area against the Russian threat.”

For Russia, he said, “it’s a major threat to the Alliance, constantly expanding its nuclear and conventional military capabilities, launching hybrid-type attacks against allied countries, for example, cyberattacks or disinformation campaigns, and generally adopting a proactive one.”

“The Alliance,” he added, “based on its new doctrine, should not simply determine and decide how we will return to its basic principles, but also where we will act on the basis of these basic principles,” he added. to remain the Euro-Atlantic area. “Furthermore, maintaining NATO’s level of ambition in terms of its defense capabilities is taken for granted, as a possible reduction would be a major blow to the Alliance’s deterrent and security in the Euro-Atlantic area.”

“Greece, due to its geographical location, has adopted a role of increased demands and initiatives in order to be able to meet its regional and international role worthily,” the minister clarified.

For defense policy, he stressed that it is based on three pillars:

Strong, reliable and efficient armed forces. The strengthening of the Greek Armed Forces is a necessary condition for the shielding of the country and the confrontation of the emerging challenges. In this context, we promote actions in the direction of armaments competence but also the strengthening of the human resources of the Armed Forces because you know very well, it is not only the means but also the people, the personnel that handles these means,

Active participation in NATO security structures and mechanisms.

– Cultivation of dialogue and cooperation with our geopolitical environment.

The Minister of National Defense did not fail to mention at the beginning of his speech to Marietta Giannakou. “A woman,” he said, “very strong, very resilient, a warrior of the Republic just as we want the North Atlantic Alliance to be.”

“This was Marietta Giannakou and we will all miss her,” said N. Panagiotopoulos.
