The importance of the strategic relationship between Greece and the USA, which is based on common historical and political values, was pointed out by the Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos, in his speech today, at the US military base in Souda, Crete.
The minister went to Souda, accompanied by the head of GEETHA, General Konstantinos Floros, accepting an invitation he received from US Ambassador Jeffrey Payat on the occasion of the visit of a delegation of American senators led by Saloud Karbach.
N. Panagiotopoulos and the head of GEETHA, together with the senators, were informed by the commander of the Naval Prevention Training Center (KENAP) about the mission and operation of the allied multinational and interdisciplinary training center operating in Crete. The Minister did not fail to present the security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as our country’s supportive actions towards Ukraine, in defense of its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
Among other things, he stressed that Greece is the undisputed pillar of peace, security and stability in the wider region, a fact that is proven by the consistency in its obligations towards NATO and the EU.
He noted that our country condemns revisionist and delinquent behavior, which is contrary to international law and the rules of good neighborliness, wherever they come from.
For his part, the head of GEETHA referred to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the security and stability of the wider region.
He also underlined the prospect and possibilities of further deepening of the military cooperation between Greece and the USA, in the context of the signing of the Implementing Settlement of the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement and the increasing frequency and duration of joint actions, collaborations and operational trainings between the two countries.
