Robert Garcia has revealed that Anthony Joshua has put together a new team to ensure he has the right idea to defeat Alexander Whiskey in this summer’s rematch.
Joshua will face whiskey in Saudi Arabia in August this year after losing the IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweight titles to the undefeated Ukrainians last September.
Briton made major changes to camp before Game 2, and veteran coach Robert McCracken dropped out of joining Angel Fernandes this year.
Garcia, who has worked with Marco Maidan, Nonito Donaire and his younger brother Mike Garcia, has also joined the team and revealed some new additions to “help Joshua think.”
Garcia told the YouTube show Robert Garcia Unfiltered:
So it influenced him, influenced him mentally.
“Maybe he thought, ‘Maybe it was the end of my career, and maybe it was,’ so a lot of things were going on in his mind.
“I think this is one of the biggest things that happened to Anthony. That’s what I’m changing here. It’s me, the angel and the other help he has.
He created a team that not only brought me and the angels together, but also planned the game and trained to go out and play with the right strategies and battle partners.
He also hired other people who were very smart.
Not even a boxing trainer, just different people who can help you think.
“A person who is with him and thinks positively of him. Everything around you is positive.
Everyone around him pushed him towards the border. He did it before losing the first battle.
You must know and believe that you are still just as good. Otherwise, it would be better than becoming champion when he first came out and defeated everyone.
Garcia explains how the loss to Usyk had a “mental” impact on Joshua, much like Andy Louis Jr. did in 2019, saying that’s a problem they’re confident in solving, he insisted.
“It goes to my head. This is something we have to change,” Garcia continued.
Because it already has. He has already won a gold medal in the best fighter in the world.
“And as a professional, he also beat the best to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
“We didn’t see it until he lost. After he lost, we saw more mental issues, so we’re working on that.”
“We need to force him to practice and train. It’s over, he just goes out there and plays.”
