Mikel Arteta said he was “happy” that Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has signed a new long-term deal with the club and been given the cult shirt number of Thierry Henry.

Having played for Arsenal for 14 years, Nketia made 92 first-team appearances and scored 23 goals.

After making his Arsenal debut in 2017, he struggled a lot, but Nketia started playing more regularly for the Mets last season, starting the last eight league games and scoring five goals.

Arsenal are still interested in signing a new striker and are in talks with Manchester City over Brazilian Gabriel Jess, but Nketia will be at the Emirates following the recent departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Obamayan next season and may play a role. Even more important.

Arsenal will wear the number 14 shirt, known for Premier League legend Henry, versus the number 30 shirt next season after confirming Nketia has signed a new long-term contract on paper.

“I’m glad Eddie is with us,” Arteta said. He represents what we all are and all the value of the club.

“I am very happy that he has extended his contract, and now we have to start working and continue to develop the great talent and humanity that is in him.”

Arsenal manager Eduardo said: “The foundation of this team is based on young talent, especially those who have experienced our academy system.

Eddie was sacked from another club when he was young, but he has always shown his attitude and ability to be the best player.

The fact that he has signed a new contract is an important part of our team’s plans for next season and we are all satisfied.

A graduate of Hale &’s Academy, Nketia is England’s top goalscorer in history, scoring 16 goals in 17 games and captaining the team that won the 2021 UEFA European Under 21 Championship.

Despite Nkeita’s goal scandal at the end of last season, Arsenal still fell out of the top four and missed out on their long-awaited return to the Champions League.
