Bia Haddad disappoints and falls in Wimbledon debut

by

Champion in Nottingham and Birmingham, semi-finalist in Eastbourne, Beatriz Haddad Maia arrived at Wimbledon with the best ranking of her career, in 28th position, and with the expectation of a long campaign. His participation in the most traditional tennis tournament, however, lasted only one match.

23rd seed, the 26-year-old Brazilian did not have a great match against Slovenian Kaja Juvan, 21, on the English night of Monday (27). She ended up losing by 2 sets to 1, with partials of 6/4, 4/6 and 6/2.

Bia faced an opponent who knew how to defend herself well against her aggressive game. Frequently scoring in counterattacks and betting on a greater variation in her blows, with many “slices”, the 62nd place in the ranking also took advantage of her rival’s unforced mistakes.

Haddad had his name shouted when he entered court 12, with many Brazilian fans. The support was not enough for the São Paulo native in a game that was very late due to two stoppages in the schedule because of rain.

The 28-year-old Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (93rd in the ranking) also fell in the first round. He debuted in the men’s singles bracket against the 25-year-old Spaniard Jaume Munar, and was bested in straight sets, with partials of 6/2, 6/4 and 7/5.

Laura Pigossi will still make her debut in the women’s bracket. The 27-year-old from São Paulo, 124th in the women’s list, will play on Tuesday (28th) against Kristina Kucova (91st), 32. It is the first time since 1988 that Brazil has two representatives in the women’s singles contest.
