Opinion – PVC: Felipão gets emotional when he remembers winning the 2002 World Cup

by

Felipe cried.

He did not burst into tears, which makes the use of the verb: cried? She got emotional then. It would be fairer to see how Felipão lowered his head in emotion, his voice choked, at the end of two hours of conversations with 14 journalists linked to the coverage of the 2002 World Cup.

Asked about having waited for Ronaldo and Rivaldo, who European doctors swore they would not be able to play in the Asian Cup, Felipão attributed the merit to doctor José Luiz Runco: “He assured me that they would play”. Well, it wasn’t the doctor who knocked on the technician’s door and said: “Call it, I guarantee it.” It was the other way around.

He got emotional when talking about the group. For him, it wasn’t Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho… It was to consolidate the group.

And Felipão got emotional when talking about it.

Why does Felipão get emotional, at 73, to the point of choking his voice? Why does a rich man, with his life made, his career consolidated, have this incredible desire to work, to the point of being able to take Athletico Paranaense to the quarterfinals of Libertadores, next week?

Why did Felipão almost cry when talking about penta?

Vicente Feola was always the 1958 world champion coach, despite having his house stoned after the defeat in 1966.

There is one detail that is sometimes overlooked.

On this June 30th, at the age of 73, Felipão has the freedom to just be: the engineer of the penta.
