Elena Rybakina overcame a relatively inexperienced to claim the historic Wimbledon victory at the expense of Ons Jabeur.

The 23-year-old came off the set to defeat the feisty Tunisians and in the process became Kazakhstan’s first Grand Slam champion.

It was somewhat ironic that Moscow-born players needed to win the title in the year the Russians were banned at SW19.

However, Rybakina has been on behalf of the adoptive countries since 2018 and has become world famous for her decision to receive additional funding.

The great maid Rybakina was encouraged by the president of the Kazakhstan Tennis Association from the players’ box and thanked him for his victory speech on the center court.

“I am incredibly grateful for supporting me through the semi-finals and finals, so I would like to express my sincere thanks to the other members of my team.”

The subject of Rybakina and his Russian roots was a major theme throughout the Wimbledon campaign, and he drew sympathy from those who did not play, including world men’s number one Daniil Medvedev, before the final.

Asked if she still “feels Russian”, Rybakina replied: “What do emotions mean to you? I mean, I’m playing tennis, so I’m here for myself. I’m enjoying my time.”

“I feel like the players who couldn’t come here, but I’m just playing on the biggest stage here, enjoying the time and giving my best.

“I have been playing in Kazakhstan for a long time. I am very happy to represent Kazakhstan.

“They believed in me. I no longer have any doubts about my feelings. It’s been a while since my journey as a footballer in Kazakhstan.

“Yes, I was born in Russia, but on behalf of Kazakhstan. I don’t know why I have to go back to this.

“For example, today the president of our federation has come to support my party. That is a big problem. I am very grateful for the great support.”
