Tennis maverick Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he received a video message from British rapper Stormzy ahead of the 2022 Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic.
The world number 45 from Australia, known for his explosions on the court and his controversial post-match press conferences, enjoyed his best Grand Slam in this year’s championship when he reached his first major final.
He was beaten by Djokovic in four sets, but the match was marred by several notable incidents, including Kyrgios driving out a “drunk” crowd with a “700 drink” and a 27-year-old smiling under his armpit.
Kyrgios has a reputation for being divided and there are several other aspects to running at Wimbledon. For example, when the assistant referee was called a “snitch”, or when Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth biggest in the world, called him a “malicious bully” after a collision.
However, he received support from world-renowned grime musician Stormzy, who sent a message to tennis stars ahead of the final against Djokovic.
“Nick, we’ve got you covered, boy,” Stormzy said in a video message. “I’m here for you now, yeah.”
Kyrgios responded by posting: “Stormbro I did my best.”
Kyrgios also spat in the direction of the audience during SW19, repeatedly violating Wimbledon’s strict dress code and arguing with reporters.
He is currently facing assault charges in a case involving his ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari, allegedly in December 2021.
Kyrgios recently spoke out about battling mental health, admitting to suffering from suicidal ideation, self-harm and drinking.
His Wimbledon final run has been made into a Netflix documentary, with Kirigo in the millions.
“Me, my team, we are very tired,” Kyrgios said after the Wimbledon final. “We played a lot of tennis. After this, I need a well-deserved vacation!
“I am very happy with this result. It is the best of my career and I hope to be here again one day.”
