Palmeiras returned to the field this Tuesday (30) for the first time after winning the second consecutive Libertadores with the victory over Flamengo, by 2-1, on Saturday (27).
Away from home, against Cuiabá, at Arena Pantanal, the team alviverde won by 3-1 in the 36th round of the Brazilian Championship.
With the hangover after winning the continental tournament, the coaching team from Palmeira decided to save all the starters and most players who frequently join the team. Not even coach Abel Ferreira commanded the team in Mato Grosso, a role that was left to assistant João Martins.
The Portuguese coach, certainly, followed the duel on TV and must have been pleased with the football presented by young people like Gabriel Silva, 19, and Giovani Henrique, 17.
The home team seized the opportunity and opened the way to victory alviverde, with goals at 4 minutes and 30 minutes into the first half — before the break, former Palmeiras player Alan Empereur made a save. In additions, Gabriel Veron closed the score. In celebration of the goal, after taking off his shirt, he ended up being expelled.
“It’s been an amazing night. I recently lost my grandmother. I was telling her to hold back and see me playing pro. Unfortunately she’s not here, but she’s very happy up there in heaven,” said Giovani, who made the first his goal as a professional.
Gabriel Silva, top scorer for the under-20 team of Palmeiras this season, with 23 goals, celebrated his second goal in the first team — he also scored in a draw with Corinthians, 2-2, for the first phase of Paulista.
“The first time I went up I was really looking forward to scoring a goal, but now I’ve changed my mind, I’m calmer in front of the goal and I’m happy. I wanted to dedicate the goal to my uncle too, who is in heaven.”
In the second half, despite pressure from the hosts, the São Paulo team managed to hold on to the advantage built in the first 45 minutes.
In the final minutes, goalkeeper Vinicius Silvestre, 27, another Academy graduate, made a point-blank save and helped to secure the victory, confirmed in the sequence by Gabriel Veron at 46.
With 62 points conquered and 36 games played, Palmeiras has no more chances to conquer Nacional, not even to be the runner-up, since Atlético-MG has 78 points and Flamengo, in second, has 70, and both still have three more games in the competition.
In third, the team alviverde decided to anticipate the vacation for some players as of Saturday (4). The 2022 preseason is scheduled to start on January 5th.
With that, the boys from the base alviverde will have two more games to dig a space in the first team next year. The team returns to the field on Monday (6), to face Athletico, away from home, and ends its participation in the Brazilian Nationals against Ceará, at Allianz Parque.
