Gary Neville believes Tottenham are the only team to have challenged Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.
City and Liverpool have dominated the league for the last five years. Last season’s title fight came to an end when the Citizens narrowly defeated the Reds in victory.
The same is expected next season, but with Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal all signing this summer, the battle for top spot could be more open.
But Neville believes Spurs are the only ones with a chance of beating City and Liverpool at the moment, and even then he hasn’t given them much of a chance.
“I think I’m Ivan Perisic [is a good signing]Tottenham Hotspur come third in my mind. Yves Bisma and Richarlison join Perisic [the mix of] They already have it,” the former Manchester United captain said on The Overlap podcast.
“They already have world-class Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. They have two world-class players and now they’re adding Perisic and Richarlison.
“I think Tottenham are the only club that can challenge. They can’t finish above Liverpool, but if Liverpool are upset in any way or Virgil van Dijk is injured, Tottenham can do it.” [challenge]It is the only club that can do that.
Tottenham have skipped this to finally end their title drought and are confident the club can have a very successful season under back-to-back winner Antonio Conte.
But Jamie Carragher, who also speaks to The Overlap, shares similar sentiments with Neville, but Tottenham’s hard-fought entry into the Champions League last season is actually a new campaign.
“I’m a big fan of Antonio Conte and I think it’s great that he’s in the Premier League.
“One thing I would say is that Tottenham will stop. [from doing well] If they are good in Europe, if you look at Conte’s record, even when he was at Chelsea, even when he didn’t have Europe, he has. [the players] I know all the difficult exercises for a week of training and how to train.
But with many games in Europe, I think his record will be more difficult.
