Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have accused Todd Boyle of “panicing” in the transfer market as Chelsea try to beat Manchester United and Manchester City in a series of deals.
Chelsea have endured a somewhat hectic transfer window so far, with Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly moving to Stamford Bridge and the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Romelu Lukaku leaving.
Thomas Tuchel has insisted that Chelsea must sign more players before the transfer window, and the team will not be able to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool unless it gets stronger.
Possibly as a result of Tuchel’s comments, Chelsea have entered the fray to acquire Frankie de Jong and Marc Cucurella.
However, Neville and Carragher are confused by Chelsea’s transfer strategy and believe that Boel is “in a panic” looking for a summer contract.
“American boy [Todd] Boyle seems to want to be a football manager, Neville said on Overlap in partnership with Skybet.
It’s been kicking around a bit and I’m a little scared at the moment. I see them trying to catch de Jong this morning. he feels that he has to do something. That pressure is on him.
“He doesn’t feel the pressure to keep the team like he used to and he will stay there for a year or two, but it will be an interesting season for Chelsea.”
They also apparently lost some guards. We may lose more against Barcelona.
“I mean, look, let’s be clear, first of all, they [Chelsea] Respond to what is available and what other clubs are doing.
Second, you get it. [Todd Boehly] You mention a lot and it’s very good. See what Manchester City and Liverpool are up to. [Txiki] Begiristain City is your sports directory. Some may not know.
Some I know, others I don’t understand or have never seen, but they get the job done quickly and efficiently.
When clubs are doing well, they don’t understand who signs players, they just sign them. Chelsea, Manchester United Glazers manager Ed Woodward said: “I’ll take over. I’m the man now. Links with all the players.” All the players City needs, all the players United want.
“Because it feels like it’s spinning. [Todd Boehly] Something needs to be done. I hear his name often.
“I don’t feel disrespectful. He’s a great guy and he just bought the club and everything.”
“He has a foundation that pays out £2.5bn, but for me it’s Ed Woodward who has pulled out of a football business that was unimaginable for many years and done it himself. We’ll see how it plays out.”
Former Liverpool defender Carragher agrees with Neville’s assessment and believes that Chelsea’s search for Spanish left-back Cucurella is evidence that the club is “in a panic”.
“I think the way most football clubs work now is more organized. You know who you want. People just go shopping, not the panic that happened in the past. And you will see,” he said.

Looking at some of the things that Chelsea are doing, do you think they are panicking because they haven’t bought anyone and they have to get someone?
“I’m looking for Ben Chilwell for £50m and another left back I didn’t want a month ago but now I do.”
Chelsea, who finished third in the Premier League last season, 19 points behind champion Manchester City, will start a new campaign against Everton on Saturday.
