Alex Albon will remain with Williams Racing until 2023 after signing a multi-year deal with the F1 team.

The Thai driver is back on the grid this year, having been relegated from Red Bull for the 2021 season after a string of unbeaten performances.

Albon has been consistently impressive this year, notably scoring points at the Australian and Miami Grands Prix, despite his Williams FW44 car being the slowest car on the grid.

He had only signed a one-year deal with Williams but the team was expected to try to renew his contract, the news was confirmed on Wednesday.

“Remaining with Williams Racing for 2023 is truly exciting and I look forward to what we can achieve as a team for the remainder of this season and next year,” Albon said in a statement.

“It’s great to be able to keep your cool and move forward in your career. I’ve really enjoyed my time here with Williams. It’s been a good year.” [although] wanted more

The team is very much looking forward to moving forward and I sincerely hope to continue this journey and further develop our learning together. Head down. I’m going to focus on getting the most out of the car and doing the best job possible.”

The announcement comes during a big week of F1 news. On Monday, Fernando Alonso made a shocking announcement that he would be leaving Alpine with Aston Martin to replace the retired Sebastian Vettel.

Alpine announced on Tuesday that backup driver Oscar Piastre would replace Alonso, but hours later the young Australian said that was a lie and that he was not driving for the French team, causing much confusion and amusement within the F1 community.

Albon himself couldn’t resist a dash of blatant drama when he announced Williams’ new contract on Wednesday, parodying Piastre’s tweet.

With my consent, I understand that Williams Racing issued a press release this afternoon stating that I will be driving for them next year.

“Exactly. I have a contract with Williams until 2023. Next year I will go to Williams.”

It remains to be seen who Alboni will partner in 2023, but current driver Nicolas Latif is likely to be dropped, while Formula E champion Nick de Vries and Formula 2 driver Logan Sargent are among the most likely candidates. on the sheet
