The CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) and the AFA (Argentine Football Association) announced an agreement to cancel the match between Brazil and Argentina. The match was interrupted shortly after its start, in September 2021, when health agents went to the pitch to remove Argentine athletes who had entered São Paulo irregularly.
These players, three of them starting from the Albiceleste team, had their origins in the United Kingdom. At the time, people arriving from the site needed to undergo a period of isolation in Brazil, as part of the prevention efforts against Covid-19. The duel then came to a halt, and since then there has been no solution.
It arrived this week, when the confederations and FIFA (International Football Federation) reached an agreement regarding the confrontation – which would make no difference in the classification of the Qualifiers for the World Cup. Thus, the judgment that was provided for in the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) will not be necessary.
“The CBF and the AFA assumed their respective responsibilities for the events that led to the abandonment of the match, as verified by FIFA’s judicial bodies”, says the note published by the Brazilian confederation, in a text very similar to that published, in Spanish, by the Argentine association.
A fine of 300,000 Swiss francs (R$ 1.6 million) was imposed on the CBF. In the case of the AFA, the value in the agreement with FIFA was 150 thousand Swiss francs (R$ 800 thousand). Half of these fines will be suspended for a probationary period of two years. The other half must be paid now, and part will go to the WHO (World Health Organization), in support of the fight against Covid-19.
The president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, had initially shown himself against an agreement. He intended to take the case forward at CAS, but he complied with a request from the technical committee. Tite did not want an uncertain situation and said that he would like to occupy the date reserved for the game (22 September) with a friendly preparatory to the World Cup in Qatar.
