The first phase of the Sarajevo Balkan Table Tennis Championship is the group stage with nine countries for men and eleven for women and our representative groups have learned their opponents. The men’s national team (Giorgos Stamatouros, Nikos Antoniadis, Dimitris Kordoutis, Gerasimos Hatzilygeroudis) went to the third group with rivals Serbia (leader) and Bulgaria.
The women’s national team (Aliki Kioufi, Dimitra-Thomais Tsekoura, Malamatenia Papadimitriou, Ioanna Gerasimatou) is in second place with Turkey (leader), Kosovo and Bulgaria.
On Tuesday the organization and the same day the groups will be completed. Out of three teams that have been formed in the two categories, the first two teams from each group are sure to qualify for the final eight, but it is expected that “tickets” will also be given to third-placed teams.
Our representative groups arrived in the afternoon in Sarajevo and completed their preparations. The national team player, Sotiris Zikos, is finally the only coach in the team, as after a last-minute contingency, the head of the women’s team, Giorgos Karytsas, stayed in Athens due to close contact with a case of coronavirus.
