Mikel Arteta says Nicolás Pepe has left the club to get more regular time, suggesting there are plans to replace the Arsenal winger.
Pepe joined the North London club from Lille for a club-record £72m in 2019 but failed to live up to expectations at the Emirates Stadium.
The 27-year-old has shown plenty of potential, but a lack of consistency has prevented him from becoming a first-team regular.
Pepe’s playing time has been declining in recent seasons and he was deemed eligible as he was loaned out to Nice for the 2022/23 season.
Speaking to reporters on Friday about the decision to let the player go, Arteta said:
“We have decided that the best decision for all parties involved is for him to go.”
“I needed to play football and I was really determined to do it.
“I think he was trying to deal with it. [his price tag] In the best possible way”, added Arteta.
He is not responsible for prices. he tried everything. His approach is phenomenal. If you know him, you will like him. But we have to make a decision. We made other decisions that affected his chances of showing the quality of him.”
Asked if he could play for Arsenal again, Arteta said: I can’t guarantee it now.
If this period is too long, it will lead to frustration and the level of performance will not meet expectations.
With Wolves linked with Neto, Arteta said the club would bring in a replacement winger.
“This is in the plan [Pepe’s loan move] Anything can happen, but now it is a reality and we have been preparing for two months to achieve what we want. .
