Grêmio is still alive in the fight against relegation, but by a thread.
This Sunday (5), the tricolor from Rio Grande do Sul managed to draw with Corinthians, in Itaquera, by 1 to 1, in the penultimate round of the Brazilian Championship.
If he lost, Grêmio would be relegated. It came to be winning 1-0, with a goal scored by Diego Souza in the first half, but Renato Augusto, 40 minutes into the second stage, scored a great goal from outside the area to equalize the score.
With the tie, the tricolor team went to 40 points and follows in the 18th position of the table.
Now, to still have a chance to escape the fall to Serie B, the Grêmio team needs to root for the defeat of Cuiabá or Juventude, who have not played in this round.
The two teams enter the field this Monday (6). They face, respectively, Fortaleza and São Paulo. If both get at least one point, there is no longer any chance of survival for the Guild.
If Cuiabá or Juventude lose, they will be tied with Bahia, with 43 points.
Thus, Grêmio, currently 18th place, would reach the last with chances of reaching those same 43 points.
The Grêmio team needs to move up to 16th place to escape relegation. Therefore, they need to win their game and hope for at least two of the teams with 43 points to lose in the final round — that way, the team from Rio Grande do Sul would escape the tie-breaker, as it has more victories.
All duels in the last round take place at 9:30 pm on the next Thursday (9). Grêmio plays at home, but faces none other than the Brazilian champion, Atlético-MG.
Corinthians, on the other hand, even with the draw, guaranteed a direct spot in next year’s Copa Libertadores group stage.
That’s because Fluminense, 7th place, lost to Bahia this Sunday. Thus, the team of coach Sylvinho (who has 56 points and is in 4th place), can only go down to 6th position.
However, Corinthians missed the chance to get revenge on the 2007 relegation.
On that occasion, the Corinthians faced Grêmio, in the last round of the championship. The game ended in 1 to 1 and decreed the downfall of the team from Alvinegro — with the right to a big party from the Gaucho fans.
In the last round, Corinthians will face Juventude, who are fighting not to fall to Serie B.
