Neil Robertson took one of the longest breaks of his billiards career over the summer and is happy to be back in the mixed doubles world with Mink Natcharatt.
The world number four has not played since losing to Jack Lisowski in the second round of the world championship in April and has missed the Champions League and the European Masters.
The season may have ended disappointingly, but Robertson credits his best season last season, winning the Masters, English Open, Players Championship and Tour Championship.
After such a successful year, the Australians wanted to recharge their batteries and be fully prepared for their busy schedule from the end of September until Christmas.
“Okay, it’s been a long summer,” Robertson said on the Talking Snooker podcast.
When you have children, you have to wait for them to finish school and enjoy the summer. We went to Sweden for 3 weeks and had a great time.
It was good because it was a long vacation. I know there were other events, but I wanted to be there when it was really ready, so I took my time and took a break.
Hopefully when you start you will be playing almost every other week, especially if you are a featured player who has more events than others.
“So I wanted to pick the right time to start the season and then finish it. Raise.”
Robertson will return for the exciting World Mixed Doubles event in Milton Keynes on September 24-25.
Down Under’s Thunder feels this type of event could really be a success as the standards for women’s sports have improved significantly in recent years.
Look at women’s billiards and how much it has evolved in the last five or six years. “The women are winning matches on the main tour, which is great. They compete in a lot of matches,” she said.
“I think all the players involved are competitive, which is what you want in an event like this.”
The team will feature Ronnie O’Sullivan teaming with Ryan Evans, Judd Trump teaming with Ng On Yee, Mark Selby teaming with Rebecca Kenna, and Robertson teaming with Mink Natcharut.
The Thai star is the reigning women’s world champion and the only player with 147 breaks, so tactical discussions have yet to begin, but the Thunder are delighted to sign the 22-year-old.
“We never got in touch to discuss tactics or anything like that. ‘Once the event gets closer, we might do something like that,'” Neal said.
“I am very happy to associate with him. A few years ago he recorded 147 videos. .
“It’s good to have young players, especially from abroad, and I like that too.
“This is very exciting and we’ve never played on this scale before. I hope the format is really good and gets the exposure it deserves.”
Robertson will not compete at the British Open right after the World Mixed Doubles, but will travel abroad to play the Hong Kong Masters from October 6-9.
The South China Morning Post reports that a record crowd of up to 8,000 is expected at the Hong Kong Coliseum, and Robertson is delighted to have won the last edition of the 2017 event.
This is my first time back in Asia since the pandemic. All players associated with Hong Kong are looking forward to coming back to Hong Kong to play billiards in other countries.
Playing in front of different fans in different cultures is a big part of why we play.
I remember the last time I won, playing Ronnie in the final in front of 3,000 people.
Heard the place is fantastic this year and I can’t wait to go and experience it for myself.
It’s unreal. If it’s like last time, it will be a great experience for all players involved.
