Fluminense and América-MG have vacancies in the Libertadores preliminary phase

Fluminense and América-MG are the teams from Brazil that will compete in the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores. Both won in the last round of the Brazilian Championship and obtained the last places in the country in the 2021 edition of the main tournament in South America.

The Rio team defeated the lantern Chapecoense by 3-0, at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro, and finished the Nacional with 54 points, in seventh place. The team from Minas Gerais overcame São Paulo by 2-0, at Independência, in Belo Horizonte, and came in eighth, with 53.

Red Bull Bragantino (56), on the other hand, scored 1-0 at Internacional, in second-half stoppages, and joined Atlético-MG, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fortaleza and Corinthians in the group of the first six. This means that the team from the interior of São Paulo will enter the Libertadores in the group stage, as will the other five clubs on that list.

The Athletico also has a confirmed presence in the group stage. The team from Paraná was only in 14th place in the Brazilian Nationals, but had already obtained its classification by winning the Copa Sudamericana in the final against Bragantino.

Athletico will still dispute the decision of the Copa do Brasil against Atlético-MG, which usually defines one of Brazil’s representatives in the Libertadores. As the two are already assured in the continental dispute, however, this vacancy was absorbed by the Brazilian.

It was for this reason – and the fact that Palmeiras, third in the Brazilian Championship, won this year’s Libertadores and qualified for the next year as champion of the title – that the usual G4 of the Nacional became the G6. There are six teams that go straight to the group stage via the Brasileiro.

Thus, the seventh and eighth placed won space in the preliminary round of the Libertadores, disputed in a knockout system. With the exception of Athletico, the teams between ninth and 15th place (Atlético-GO, Santos, Ceará, Internacional, São Paulo and Cuiabá) will compete in the Copa Sudamericana in 2022.
