Corinthians announces departure of coach Vítor Pereira

The Portuguese Vítor Pereira will not be the coach of Corinthians in 2023. The coach’s departure was announced by the club’s president, Duilio Monteiro Alves, after the 1-0 defeat to Atlético-MG this Sunday (13), for the last round of Brazilian championship.

“Today, a cycle ends. Vítor Pereira and his technical commission will not remain at the club. The contract ends, it was not renewed”, said the representative in a statement to the press at Neo Química Arena.

Vítor Pereira was not on the edge of the field in the match, as he was suspended after being sent off for complaints in the 2-2 draw with Coritiba, last Wednesday (9).

The president of Corinthians did not grant an interview, alleging a health problem. He added praise to the coach during the speech.

“We put an end to the 2022 season, which, for me, was good. After many years, Corinthians fought up there, reached a final of the Copa do Brasil, the entire Brazilian Championship remained between the four and we are in Libertadores next year with a direct spot”, he evaluated.

Pereira had a contract until the end of the year and decided not to continue with Corinthians. The coach even indicated that he wanted the renewal, but that this decision would also depend on family issues.

The doubt about Pereira’s permanence had been dragging on for a few months. His mother-in-law has health problems, which is why he kept the coach’s wife and children living in Portugal.

The coach arrived at Corinthians in March and led the team in 63 games, with 29 wins, 16 draws and 18 defeats. In the period, the team was runner-up in the Copa do Brasil, reached the semifinals of Paulista and the quarterfinals of Libertadores, and finished the Brazilian in fourth place.

“Thank Vítor, who has become a brother. He’s a guy I respect a lot, he did a great job here. Thank all his commission as well. It was a year of many positive experiences”, concluded the president, without mentioning any name in the plans of the club to assume the role next year.
