Name of the game in Lusail When he scored Brazil’s two goals in the victory against Serbia, Richarlison was responsible for breaking a 20-year drought.

Since the 2002 World Cup, in Korea and Japan, a player wearing the number 9 shirt has not scored for the Brazilian national team in the team’s debut in the World Cup.

In the campaign for the fifth championship, Ronaldo Fenômeno scored the equalizer against Turkey before Rivaldo, from the penalty spot, made it 2-1.

Before that, other famous number 9s scored in the opening of World Cups, such as Baltazar, in 1950 and 1954, Reinaldo, in 1978, and Careca (twice), in 1990.

Richarlison’s performance also made Brazil’s number 9 find its way back into the net in a World Cup, since in the Russian Cup, four years ago, Gabriel Jesus didn’t score a single goal.

Richarlison, with the two goals that put Brazil at the top of Group G, joined a club, that of Brazilians who scored two goals (or more) in the debut of the selection in a Cup.

The Tottenham player becomes his eighth member, along with Leônidas (France-1938), Ademir (Brazil-1950), Pinga (Switzerland-1954), Mazzola (Sweden-1958), Jairzinho (Mexico-1970), Careca (Italy-1990) and Neymar (Brazil-2014).

Richarlison will try to expand his artillery on Monday (28), when the team faces Switzerland, who beat the Cameroonian team by 1-0 in the debut.
