Ross Brawn to step down as F1 sporting director

by

Englishman Ross Brawn will step down as sporting director of Formula 1, according to an announcement on the official website of the category that commands world motorsport.

Originally technical director for Michael Schumacher at Benetton (1992-1996) and then at Ferrari (1997-2006), Brawn, an engineer by training, became the successful owner of the Brawn Grand Prix team when he bought the former BAR-Honda, who failed to win a title in his only season in 2009 thanks to compatriot Jenson Button.

Brawn quickly sold Brawn GP to Mercedes to manage the German brand’s grand return to F1, and then it was quietly claimed in 2013, a year before Lewis Hamilton’s first world title with a Silver Arrow.

Sporting director of F1 since its acquisition by the American company Liberty Media in 2017, Brawn considers that, at the age of 68, the time has come to take a step back and turn to his other great passion, pole fishing.

“The time is right,” he explained on the official F1 website. “We’ve done the heavy lifting and now we’re in a period of consolidation. A new technical regulation will come into effect in 2026, four years from now, so it’s better for another group of people to take over.”

“I leave F1 in a great situation. I loved every minute of my 46-year career, I was lucky to work with great teams, great drivers and great people. Now I’m going to watch F1 from my sofa, like a fan”, concluded the engineer British.
