Very good performances from Garifallou and the junior dueling sword team
Once again Greece had very good performances at the European Junior Fencing Cups (U17) in Budapest and Copenhagen.
EUROPEAN FENCE CUP U/W (U17) – BUDAPEST (HUNGARY)
Stavrina Garifallou (AOX Aigaleo) competed on Sunday in her fifth European Junior Epee Cup. With six wins in the qualifying round, he easily made it to the main draw. She had a bye to the round of 256 and then defeated Czech Illekova (15-7), Italy’s Gabola (15-14) and Poland’s Wojtas (15-4) in quick succession.
In the battle to enter the quarterfinals, she was defeated by Israel’s Koren with a score of 15-14, as a result of which she took ninth place out of a total of 270 athletes. Once again, the Greek showed that she is among the best athletes in Europe and the world in the junior category.
Italy’s Collini, Israel’s Koren and Hungary’s Kollar, who finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, were the three Europeans who passed her in the Budapest rankings, but none threaten her at the top of the European rankings.
With the 24 points she secured in the Hungarian capital, she reached 268 points and the Israeli Kuritzky who is chasing her has 185 points.
EUROPEAN FEATURE CUP U/W (U17) – COPENHAGEN (DENMARK)
His dueling sword team with Konstantinos Karabasis (AO Ariston Paanias), Panagiotis Theodoropoulos (AO Ariston Paanias) and Nikos Passias (AA Ioannina) also made a very good appearance. As No. 7 of the initial ranking, the Greek team passed with a “bye” from the round of “64” and was drawn to play in the “32” with the mixed team of athletes from Bulgaria, Singapore and Switzerland, which they defeated with 45-41.
In the battle to enter the quarterfinals, they prevailed over the third team of Ukraine with 45-39 and found themselves in front of the team of Israel that had just eliminated one of the favorites, the first team of Ukraine. Against the Israelis, the Greek team was defeated 45-32 and advanced to the ranking matches for places 5-8.
The German team chose not to compete in the qualifying matches, so Greece faced Turkey with the fifth-place trophy, which it captured after a 45-38 victory. The fifth place among 43 teams is particularly encouraging for the continuation of the season and gives hope for very good performances in the team of the European and World U17 Championships.
Greece is currently ranked eighth in the European Youth Duel Sword team rankings.
