Find out which stadiums have seen the most, and least, goals in the Cup

by

In the Cup, which had six games ending 0-0, fans who bought tickets for the matches at the Khalifa International Stadium, in Al Rayyan, cannot complain about the lack of goals. The arena had 24 goals in 6 matches, an average of 4 goals per game.

With capacity for 45,857 people —after revision by FIFA—, Khalifa entered the World Cup with both right and left foot in England 6 x 2 Iran, a match that opened Group B, right on the second day of the competition in Qatar, and which had more goals scored.

Khalifa witnessed another rout, Croatia 4 x 1 Canada (first Canadian goal in World Cups). It was also the stadium that hosted the two surprising Japanese comebacks in Group E, 2-1 against Germany, on the 23rd, and again against Spain, on the 1st of December.

Every team that stepped on Khalifa scored goals. A good omen for anyone following the Netherlands vs. United States, the match that opens the last 16 stage, this Saturday (3). By the way, the Dutch already played there in the only match they didn’t win, 1-1 against Ecuador.

Just behind Khalifa comes Al Thumama, in Doha, with 19 goals, 7 of them for Spain, in the 7-0 against Costa Rica. It was also there that Qatar fell in the World Cup, losing 3-1 to Senegal. The stadium has not seen a draw in its six clashes, the seventh will be the match between France and Poland, qualifying for the quarterfinals.

At the other end of the list, the stadium that had the fewest goals was Ahmed Bin Ali, which witnessed the elimination of the Belgian generation, after the goalless draw with Croatia.

In all, there were only 9 goals, an average of 1.5 per match. And England tried to help by scoring 3-0 against Wales. It is in this dryness of goals that Argentina faces Australia in the round of 16, this Saturday (3), to try to raise the average a little.

Brazil plays its round of 16 clash against South Korea at stadium 974, where it has stepped before, and beat Switzerland 1-0. The arena has already seen two penalties wasted by World Cup stars, Lewandowski, against Mexico, and Messi, against Poland.

Stage of the final, Lusail, the biggest arena in Qatar, with 88,966 fans, is also not one of the top scorers, with just 13 goals. It was there that Brazil beat Serbia, in the debut, by 2 to 0. But the stadium has already had defeats by Argentina, against Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, against Cameroon.

In theory, the arena was reserved for big stars Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Argentina and Brazil have already played there twice. Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 and go back to the round of 16 – the stadium was scheduled for the round of 16 match of the leader of Group H, in which the Portuguese were seeded. Portugal will face Switzerland there, on Tuesday (6).
