End of an era for FINA: Name and structure change

by

After 114 years, the international athletics federation is changing its name and not only that.

The extraordinary conference held in Melbourne, on the sidelines of the 25-lane World Swimming Championships starting tomorrow (13/12), endorsed the executive committee’s decision so the acronym FINA is now a thing of the past and replaced by World Aquatics, following the model of the international athletics federation, which a few years ago was renamed from IAAF to World Athletics.

Everyone in our community is proud of what FINA has achieved in the development of our sports. Looking to the future, World Aquatics will for the first time find all aquatics athletes united under one brand. Our organization’s identity is now focused on the shared vision: a world united through water, for health, life and sport“, said the president of the international federation, Hussein Al-Musalam, who underlined that the name change was the wish of the great majority of athletes, “… several of whom didn’t even know what the letters in FINA stood for».

The definitive name change and the introduction of a new logo is the culmination of an 18-month process for the organizational transformation of the international athletics federation, under the guidance of the special Reform Committee. Among the most important changes is the establishment of the independent Aquatics Integrity Unit, also in athletics standards, as well as the enhanced participation of athletes in the decision-making centers.
