Permission for NBA teams to sign replacement players due to COVID

by

The crisis with outbreak of coronavirus in the NBA and match adjournments made decisions. The League and the Players’ Association (NBPA) have agreed to teams are now allowed to sign replacements due to the many absences that occur constantly due to Covid-19. In fact, the decision came into force immediately and will last at least until January 19, when the situation will be re-evaluated.

Under the agreement, teams will be able to sign one player for each case on their roster. That is, if a team has five cases, it will be able to sign five substitutes. In fact, the measure is not optional, as teams will be required to sign a replacement for every two cases, two replacements for three cases and at least three replacements if they have four or more cases.

It is worth noting that the amounts that will be spent on obtaining replacements will not be counted in the salary cap and the luxury tax limit. If that were not the case, many teams would have a problem, such as the Nets, for whom each contract would have cost them approximately $ 500,000.

Under NBA regulations, a match is only postponed if a team has less than eight players available to fight. A player who is positive enters an isolation from which he leaves after ten days or if he presents two negative tests with a difference of 24 hours.
