THE Juan Carlos Untue forced to give up a very rewarding coaching career when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS in 2020. It is a neurodegenerative condition that affects everything from movement in the limbs to basic vital functions such as breathing.
The former Barcelona assistant coach spoke about the difficult situation in which those who are unable to cope financially find themselves. “When the time comes for you to face breathing problems and have to have a tracheostomy, the first thing doctors ask you is if you have the resources to have a nurse by your side 24 hours a day. You bear this cost, you have no help. In other words, it is a disease that if you don’t have money, you can’t deal with it. It bothers me that I am privileged and will have this care and other people don’t. Unfortunately, many people who do not have the money, decide to give up. They choose to die and they do it because they feel they will become a burden on their family. This is something our society should not allow“, said the 55-year-old Spanish technician.
