History was made in Portugal – Referee showed a “white” card!

by

After the red and yellow cards, now let’s start getting used to the white ones! Benfica’s game against Sporting Lisbon for the country’s women’s league kicked off yesterday with the referee of the 3-0 game in favor of the “eagles” showing a white card to the medical staffs of both teams.

What happened; The white card has a completely different… logic than the other two that we have known so far. Essentially, it is a reward for a move, an action taken during the match with the referee having the right to show it to all the people on the field.

In our case, the referee wanted to reward the medical staffs of both teams who ran to a point in the stands of the pitch to provide first aid to a fan who lost consciousness and collapsed.

The innovation of the white card has been introduced in Portugal by FIFA, with the belief that this change will be implemented in other leagues for the referee to applaud actions during the match.
