Araujo is first in assists in the league and ready for a record!

His racing mutation Sergio Araujo continues and… impresses. The Argentinian forward excels in the new role assigned to him by Matias Almeida in AEK. 5 goals in 20 league appearances may not be an enviable record for a player who struggles in attack, but ‘Chino’ makes his teammates happy.

Brave and in the mood for… a treat after his birthday yesterday, the 31-year-old ace scored two goals in victory over Aris (3-0) at the Opap Arena for matchday 20, serving his team’s second and third goals to Mijat Gacinovic and Orbelin Pineda.

Araujo with these two assists reached seven in the championship and it is first in the relevant categorywhile with six they follow Paolo Fernandez (he did five as a Volos player and one – the one with the corner that led to Vida’s goal with a header against Ionikos – as an AEK player) and Daniel Manciniwhile five has o Niklas Eliasson who returned to action yesterday after a three-month absence.

The Argentine’s seven assists make up career-high performance in the major leagueas he had surpassed it only in the 2014/15 season, when he had 8 with Las Palmas but in a league of 39 matches and in the second division of Spain (LaLiga 2).

“Chino” had reached 5 assists with Las Palmas the very next season, in the first division of Spain (LaLiga), but in 30 matches. With AEK he had 4 assists in the league in 15 matches in the 2016/17 season, in his first term, while in the second, the 2017/18 season when “Enosas” won the championship, Araujo had 3 assists in 23 appearances in the Super League. In his two previous seasons with the yellow and black, he had just one (in 15 matches in 2019/20) and two (in 27 appearances in 2021/22) assists respectively.
