Varane’s “goodbye” to the French national team follows those of Hugo Lloris, Karim Benzema and Steve Mandada, while the experienced stopper emphasized that the succession situation, which passes into the hands of talented footballers who are ready to represent the national emblem worthily.

In detail in his post he states:

“Representing our great country for a decade has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Every time I wore that very special blue jersey I felt immense pride. The duty to give everything, play with my heart and win every time we put on the field. I have been thinking about it for several months now and have decided that the time is right for me to retire internationally.

Since I was a child, I remember watching the 1998 national team, this team, these players who made us experience indescribable emotions. I dreamed of becoming our heroes and 20 years later I had one of the best experiences of my life, one that made me really proud. We brought home the Cup!! I will never forget it. I still feel every one of the emotions I felt that day, July 15, 2018. That was one of the most amazing and unforgettable moments of my life.

This victory that we all won together would never have been possible without the support of Didier Deschamps, every member of the management and staff over the years, and my teammates who honored our shirt in every game we played. But most importantly, this victory would not have been possible without each and every one of you supporting us along the way. The warmth, celebrations and memories of our return to France will forever be etched in my mind. And after losing the World Cup final, with a beautiful run, you gave us a hero’s welcome when we came back. To each and every one of you, a thousand THANKS!

I will definitely miss those times with you, but it’s time for the new generation to take over. We have a bunch of talented young players who are ready to take over, who deserve a chance and who need you.”
