Benfica announces the departure of Jorge Jesus, former coach of Flamengo

by

Jorge Jesus, 67, is no longer Benfica coach. The Portuguese club announced this Tuesday (28), the departure of the coach, which took place after an agreement between both parties.

Jesus, who won five titles for Flamengo between 2019 and 2020, including Libertadores and Brasileiro, returned to his home country in mid-2020. There, however, he was unable to repeat the good performance obtained in Rio de Janeiro.

Last season, he saw Sporting, Benfica’s main local rival, win the Portuguese Championship, which hadn’t happened for 19 years. In the current, managed to classify the club to the last 16 of the Champions League, leaving behind Barcelona in the group stage, but is only third in the Portuguese Championship, four points behind Porto and Sporting, and has already been eliminated from the Cup from Portugal.

Recently, by the way, Benfica lost to both rivals. For Sporting, on the 3rd, at home, for the Portuguese, and for Porto, on the last Thursday (23), by 3-0, for the Cup of Portugal. Especially the last result, the way it happened — the team from the north of Portugal built the score in the first half — contributed to the fall.

The coach even negotiated a possible return to Flamengo in recent days, but the relationship cooled and the Rio de Janeiro club went to negotiate with Paulo Sousa, the current commander of the Polish national team, which should be announced soon.

A destination could be Atlético-MG, also without a coach since Cuca left, who asked to leave the team, due to family problems, at a meeting this Monday (27).

Check out Benfica’s official note:

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica informs that, by mutual agreement between the parties, Jorge Jesus is no longer coach of Benfica.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica SAD thanks Jorge Jesus for all the work developed over the last year and a half and wishes him all the best for the future. He adds that he will comply with all contractual obligations until the end of the existing employment relationship or until Jorge Jesus and his technical team assume a new professional commitment.

Nélson Veríssimo takes over the role of coach of Benfica’s first team until the end of the season.”
