Opinion – On the Run: The number of women in sporting events grows in 2022

“Better than 2021, but still below pre-pandemic.”

The phrase by Daniel Krutman, CEO of TicketSports, sums up well the perception of what the street racing market was like in 2022. last year. The survey, which will be officially released on Tuesday (7), was brought forward exclusively to the blog On the run.

The most encouraging information is the growth in women’s participation in events. The female presence advanced by three percentage points and went from 42%, in 2021, to 45% last year. Men account for 55% of the total.

Despite being positive, the 2022 result remains far from the historic maximum. In 2018, women were the majority, with 53% of registrations.

The reasons for the drop (and partial resumption) of the female presence are still unclear. It is speculated that this is the end of the most acute phase of the pandemic, but there is no data to support this thesis. In any case, the market expects that the number of women will maintain the upward curve for the next year.

The survey also indicates that the largest age group is made up of people between 36 and 45 years old, with the average age of participants being 40 years old – one year less than that recorded in 2021. And a curiosity: there are more runners between 56 and 65 years (8% of the total) than between 15 and 25 years (6% of the total).

Road racing represents the majority of sporting events in the country, with 81% of the total, followed by cycling (6%), triathlon (4%), trail running (3%) and swimming and crossing events (1%). . Virtual races, in which each athlete runs a certain distance on their favorite route, and which emerged as an alternative during the pandemic, have shrunk and today represent just 1% of the total.
