Hospitalization of Colonel Nunes hinders Caboclo’s maneuver at CBF

by

One of the vice presidents of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Antônio Carlos Nunes, 82, Colonel Nunes, needed to be hospitalized late on Wednesday (4) after a battery of cardiac exams. The leader is considered an important part of the recent maneuver of Rogério Caboclo to return to the presidency of the entity.

The top hat is at the Albert Einstein hospital, in São Paulo, according to information from the GE portal. He reportedly asked the CBF for a medical license, alleging heart problems, with the possibility of undergoing surgery. The local press office does not confirm the admission. The entity that manages Brazilian football did not respond to the contacts in the report until the publication of this text.

Based on the CBF statute, Caboclo, removed after accusation of sexual harassment, delivered to the entity a petition signed by him and Nunes for the latter to assume the presidency on an interim basis until March 2023.

The provision in question, Article 61, says that “the vice-president who is appointed by him shall replace the president, in the event of absence, leave or impediment.”

The colonel was in the top position right after the scandal broke out, being the eldest, but left the position soon after. The other vices decided to put Ednaldo Rodrigues in charge of the institution, as a way of appeasing the political crisis that also involved state federations and clubs.

Nunes’ reappointment could facilitate Caboclo’s return to the presidency, even before the 21-month punishment for sexual harassment is fulfilled. He has been away since June this year, after being denounced by his former secretary.

CBF was notified on Wednesday afternoon through the 15th Notary Office of Rio de Janeiro, but understood that it should not accept the pair’s request.

In a statement, the organization says that interim president Ednaldo Rodrigues “continues to carry out his duties normally” and that Caboclo “is prohibited from participating in any activity related to football for 21 months, by decision of the Brazilian Football Ethics Commission, endorsed in this way. unanimous vote by the General Assembly, formed by the 27 State Football Federations, a decision accepted by FIFA and extended to the world scope.”

The 21-month penalty concerns only the secretary’s complaints. There are two other accusations of sexual harassment and one of moral harassment – this one made by a director of the entity – that are still being investigated by the Ethics Committee.

Faced with the CBF’s denial, Caboclo’s lawyers intend to appeal to the CBMA (Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration), which works as an arbitration chamber chosen by entities to resolve commercial and electoral conflicts.

Without any support from the CBF, the leader who has been removed by March 2023 will likely not have a chance to run for re-election. The next election must be called from April 2022, during which time he will be ineligible.
