Paris-Bayern: Like a final… from the “16”

by

The lottery played a bad game in Paris and Bayern pitting the two powerful teams against each other “16” of the Champions League. Tonight (22:00, COSMOTE Sport 2) they duel in the French capital and nobody can predict what will happen. After all, the two teams are not distinguished by their consistency this year.

Paris are coming off losses to Marseille (in the Cup) and Monaco (in the league) and are not looking to hit the ground running after the World Cup, with most of their stars looking ’empty’. Moreover, Christophe Gaultier saw them Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe suffering from injuries in recent days. Both are in the squad, the Argentine will be in the starting line-up, but the same will hardly happen with the French star, who will probably remain on the bench. Mukiele and Renato Sanchez are definitely out of action.

On the other hand, Bayern has two consecutive wins in the Bundesliga but is only +1 from Union Berlin and +3 from Dortmund. THE Julian Nagelsmann in addition to a lot of muttering from veterans and the media, he also has to deal with the absences of Neuer, Hernandez, Mane, Mazraoui and Wanner.

The two groups they have met 11 other times in the past, all in the Champions League, with Paris counting 6 wins and Bayern 5, while there is balance in goals (15-15). In Paris, the French team has four wins and one loss, in the most recent visit of the Bavarians, in April 2021 (0-1), when Paris had qualified for the semi-finals thanks to their 3-2 victory in Munich in the first match. All their other battles were for the groups, except of course the 2020 final in Lisbon (the year of the outbreak of Covid-19), where the Germans had prevailed 1-0 with Koman’s goal in the 59th minute.

Possible compositions:

Paris (Galtier): Donnarumma, Danilo, Marquinhos, Ramos, Hakimi, Verratti, Fabian Ruiz, Nuno Mendes, Vitinia, Messi, Neymar.

Bayern (Nagelsmann): Sommer, Cancelo, Upamecano, De Ligt, Davies, Kimmich, Goretzka, Sane, Musiala, Coman, Miller.

Referee: Michael Oliver (England)
