Statements regarding the future of Super League 2 were made by Takis Baltakos. The president of EPO was at an event of EPS Chania and stated that the championship of the second division cannot be started again, as 10 to 15 teams say they’ll pull out of it.
Afterwards, he emphasized that a meeting should be held with the Deputy Minister to discuss what is to happen, while he also spoke about possible funding of the Unions.
In detail what he said:
“We made an appointment with Super League 2, but this did not bring any result, that is, it rather ended up in a dead end because they argue that even if they get some money, the league cannot be held because several teams – about 10 to 15 as they always say of course – they will not be able to start again.
From here on, a meeting with the deputy minister must definitely take place so that we can see if some solution can be found where I believe it can. The amateur unions have been bleeding since the era of the memorandums and then with the COVID. We then had 4400 clubs according to the FIFA tables and now we have 2500.
This huge reduction is due to the reasons I mentioned. The purpose of the EPO is to finance the Unions so that they in turn help the clubs to organize proper championships and have the ability to give them material (balls, jerseys, etc.) to the clubs so that they can cope.
I had also said before the election that I would go to the celebrations of as many Unions as I could, so from the moment I had the honor of accepting the invitation from the president of the EPS Chania and Mr. Konstantinidis, I am very happy to have found myself.”
