With Georgiadou and Goundura, the “Acropolis” Cup at OAKA

On the three days of March 3-4-5, the Hellenic Fencing Federation in collaboration with the world federation (FIE) will organize at OAKA the 37th “Acropolis” cup, one of the leading women’s saber events in the world. In the fencing hall of OAKA, the best female fencers from all over the world will meet for the victory in the 5th consecutive event of the competitive season. In recent years, Despina Georgiadou and Dora Goundoura have also been included in these, who will compete for the first time at home as the world’s No. 3 and No. 9, respectively, and are expected to provide great excitement to the sports fans. On Friday 3/3, the individual qualifying round and the straight elimination (knockout) matches will be held until the main draw of 64 is formed, the matches of which will start on the morning of Saturday 4/3. The matches of the National teams will be held on Sunday 5/3.

A total of 177 athletes from 34 different countries and 25 different national teams will compete in the 2023 event. Greece, in addition to its two leading fencers, will be represented by 18 other gymnasts, among whom will be Claire Benou and Athenais Mavrikakis who, together with Georgiadou and Goundoura, will make up the foursome of the National team for the team event on Sunday 5/ 3. Marina Paizi will not be able to compete either in the individual or in the team due to the injury she is suffering from in her hip. In detail, the Greek women who will compete are as follows: Despina Georgiadou (PAO), Dora Gountoura (AO Ariston Peanias), Clairi Benou (AO Ariston Paanias), Athenais Mavrikakis (AO Aspida), Kalliopi Hatzakou (E Kostea Geitona), Anna Douka ( OSFP), Marilena Gazepidis (OSFP), Despina Konstantakopoulou (OSFP), Katerina Lytina (AO Aspida), Agni Palaska (Apollon Vrilission), Alina Korousi (AO Apollon Vrilission), Ioanna Hatzakou (E Kostea Geitona), Eleni Anna Roumpi (OSFP ), Christina Houzouri (OSFP), Anna Geronikou (AS Victoria), Evangelia Martha Kaveli (OSFP), Olga Kazakou (Elysiakos AO), Anna Iosifina Papada (E Kostea Geitona), Antonia Argyros Papatheodorou (E Kostea Geitona), Konstantina Saitani ( PAO). In the arbitration, Greece will have a five-member representation by Olympic Games referee Andreas Doubis and international referees Christos Saini, Giorgos Tsouroutas, Nikos Kosmas and Vangelis Boukas.
