FIFA announced this Tuesday (4) the three finalists for the Puskás Award, which elects the most beautiful goal of the year. The winner will be known at The Best event, which takes place on the 17th and will also award the best player of the last season.
Czech Patrik Schick, Argentine Erik Lamela and Iranian Mehdi Taremi compete for the award for the most beautiful goal of 2021.
The bids were chosen in a poll in which the FIFA Legends (a group of ex-coaches and ex-players) participated, as well as fans, who voted on The Best award website to choose the three best goals from a list of 11 participants.
Schick, a Bayer Leverkusen player, won the award with the goal he scored from midfield at the last Euro Cup, in June of last year, against Scotland. The Czech Republic beat the Scots 2-0.
Erik Lamela’s goal, competing for Puskás, was scored in the derby against Arsenal, in March 2021, by the Premier League. The Argentine opened the scoring in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat with a kick from a kettle. In the same game, however, Lamela was sent off.
Third contestant for the award, the Iranian Mehdi Taremi registered his great goal when he scored by bicycle against Chelsea, in the quarter-finals of the last Champions League. Porto, Taremi’s team, won 1-0, but ended up being eliminated by the English from the competition.
