The Tottenham striker he reached 54 goals in the match against Italy and overtook the one-time Manchester United great to become the top scorer for the Three Lions.

Thus, Rooney speaking about the achievement of his countryman, in his blog in the “Times” said: “When I broke the record with a penalty against Switzerland in September 2015, Harry Kane was the first player to run to celebrate with me. I later mentioned Harry in my locker room speech. I said that I hoped the young players in the team would come close to the record themselves and even be able to surpass me.

Harry had only scored three goals for England at that point – but I said those words because I knew he could do it. Even then, with just four caps under his belt, I knew he could become England’s top scorer if he continued the way he was and I wanted to encourage him. I’m delighted for him, his family and the England team now that he’s made it after scoring England’s 54th goal against Italy on Thursday night” were the words of the Manchester United legend.
