THE Alexander Ceferin will be re-elected on Wednesday president of UEFA at its 47th congress in Lisbon, as he will be the only candidate, just like four years ago in Rome, which followed his first election on September 14, 2016 in Athens.
The Slovenian factor goes to one third term having responded well to major challenges, such as dealing with the pandemic and its consequences, the European Super League and also Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, important changes were promoted during his days, such as in the Champions League, which will increase its teams to 36, or the Nations League, which will have an additional knockout round. He also stood up to FIFA when defending a World Cup every two years.
A former futsal player with Litiga and president of the Slovenian Football Association since 2011, the now 55-year-old Ceferin, born in Grossuplije about twenty kilometers southeast of Ljubljana, a lawyer by profession, became the seventh president of UEFA in Athens on September 14, 2016 at its 12th extraordinary congress, in an election forced by FIFA’s suspension of France’s Michel Platini, who was re-elected to a third term at UEFA in March 2015. Platini was acquitted by a Swiss court last summer. Ceferin defeated Dutchman Michel van Praag by 42 votes to 13 and was re-elected on 7 February 2019 in Rome, this time unopposed. The same thing that will happen tomorrow in Lisbon.
