Yesterday 08/04 in Sarajevo and on the sidelines of the Under 21 European Table Tennis Championship, the draw for qualifying stage 2 of the European Men’s-Women’s Team Championship took place.
The final stage, before the final stage, will be held in Osijek, Croatia, and Greece, who take part in both categories, have learned their opponents. Our men’s national team is in Group 5 with Spain (leader), Norway and Ireland. The women’s national team has been drawn in Group 2 and will meet Italy (leader) and Finland.
Five groups have been formed for the men, 4 for the women and Osijek will host the stage 2 matches over the three days from 5 to 7 May 2023. The European Championships will be held in Malmö, Sweden from 10 to 17 September 2023.
We remind you that our representative groups competed in the B category of the qualifiers and had started their effort last October, at the Peace and Friendship Stadium. They had won the first place in their groups for stage 1 and in Osijek they will immediately chase from the new groups the second and decisive step for the finals of the European Teams Championships.
As the European Sports Union (ETTU) has informed for a long time, the winners of the groups, as well as the teams that will take the 2nd place in them, will qualify for the final stage of the European championship. The 3rd teams in the groups will have another chance to qualify through a playoff match. They will compete for 2 remaining spots for women and 1 for men.
In the report on the draw ETTU states that after the withdrawal of Estonia (men and women) and Montenegro (men) its board decided to offer vacancies to teams that finished 3rd in the B division group tournaments at the stadium 1. For the two male vacancies applications were submitted from Bosnia/Herzegovina, Latvia and Ireland, while for the female vacancy similar applications were submitted from Bosnia/Herzegovina, Latvia and Norway. In the end, the vacancies were filled by Latvia and Ireland for the men and Bosnia/Herzegovina for the women.
