Optimism in Serbia for Djokovic’s entry into Australia

by

Serbian PM says optimistic about Djokovic case outcome Ana Brnabic. «This morning I called the Australian Foreign Minister. There is a positive tone on the Australian side. I said that the Serbian government is ready to provide any guarantee to allow Novak to enter Australia“, She underlined in an interview on a private television station.

The Serbian Prime Minister said that following interventions from Belgrade delivered gluten-free food, a laptop and data cards to Djokovic to be able to communicate with his family. Ana Brnabic also said that Djokovic’s request for a private residence was not accepted and so the Serbian tennis player will stay in the hotel of illegal immigrants until Monday when his appeal will be heard.

Parliament Speaker: It is unlikely that Australia will respect any request from Serbia

In contrast to the Prime Minister of Serbia, the Speaker of Parliament Ivica Dacic he did not seem so optimistic. «I think it is unlikely that Australia will comply with any request from Serbia. This is a politicization of the Djokovic case. Hundreds and thousands of people receive daily medical exemptions to visit a country. […] It is obvious that there is political involvement in the case. We need to make it clear that this will have a negative impact on our relations with Australia.“, Dacic pointed out in an interview on Serbian public television. The speaker also said that Djokovic holds a Serbian diplomatic passport.

Novak Djokovic has been staying at a hotel for illegal immigrants in Melbourne since last Thursday, where he was taken after refusal of the Australian federal authorities to allow him to enter the country with medical exception.

Djokovic refuses to get the coronavirus vaccine and went to Australia to participate in the Australian Open tournament having obtained a visa under a medical exemption because he was ill. The border authorities declared his visa invalid and decided to deport him. The Serbian tennis player has appealed and the case will be heard next Monday.
