The PPC Cycling Tour of Greece is moving towards the implementation of its second edition, starting from Heraklion, Crete and the Karteros Beach Sports Center on May 2nd and ending in Ancient Olympia on May 6th, after a Prologue and 4 stages of unique beauty.
The enchanting regions of Greece have already aroused the interest of alternative tourists, which was one of the main goals set by the Deputy Ministry of Sports in the revival of the Tour: the connection with sports tourism.
Groups of amateur cyclists come to experience the places they admired during last year’s global TV coverage and combine to cycle in the footsteps of last year’s stages!
The revelation was made by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, in his radio interview, in which he also referred to a specific group of 30 French amateur cyclists who went to Crete, with the aim of cycling the route Heraklion – Chania, i.e. the 1st stage of last year’s Tour of Greece .
“It was with great joy that I was informed that a group of 30 French tourists came to Crete thanks to the PPC Cycling Tour 2022. As I learned, talking to them, they had seen the images through global coverage and aimed to get to know the Tour’s areas but and to cycle themselves on the Heraklion – Chania route, exactly as we laid it out last year” said Mr. Avgenakis and continued:
“For us who believed in the revival of such a demanding event, precisely because we realized its multiple benefits, it is very important to see in practice how we are creating a circle of visitors, alternative tourists.
At the Deputy Ministry of Sports, for the last 4 years, we have been trying to develop the less popular sports, but above all to highlight the power that sport has to strengthen the economy, also through sports tourism
The extroversion of the country by taking on major international events is a passport of credibility that Greece can play a leading role at this level as well.
This year, we are continuing the effort of the Tour, with new routes and with the ultimate goal of covering as many regions of Greece as possible in the coming years.”
