ATP: Took position in favor of Djokovic – 97% of tennis players vaccinated

by

Clear position in his favor Novak Djokovic took, albeit several days late, the Men’s Tennis Federation (ATP). He welcomed the verdict, noting that the Serb had done what he was told he needed to do to get to Australia, but reiterated that he recommended vaccination against Covid-19, stressing that 97 out of 100 people in the world are vaccinated.

The announcement states:

«The ATP fully respects the sacrifices made by the Australian people during the pandemic and the strict travel arrangements in place. But the difficulties that have arisen in recent days regarding the entry of an athlete into Australia have shown the need for more understanding, better communication and application of the rules.

Traveling to Melbourne, it is clear that Novak Djokovic believed he had the necessary medical exemption to enter the country. What happened until Monday’s trial affected all sides, including the athlete and his preparation for the Australian Open. Medical exemption applications are made independently of the ATP, however we are in constant contact with the Australian federation asking for transparency in the process. We welcome the court ruling on Monday and look forward to the exciting weeks to come.

ATP continues to recommend vaccination to all athletes, as we consider it necessary for our sport in the pandemic. This is based on scientific evidence supporting health gains and is in line with travel regulations, which may become stricter in the future. “It is encouraging that 97% of the top 100 players in the world rankings have been vaccinated, reaching this year’s Australian Open.”
