The Women’s National Team is holding its main stage of preparation for EuroBasket 2023 in Portaria. Greece will face Montenegro, Latvia and Spain and Dimitris Perdikos, one of Petros Prekas’ colleagues on the bench of our representative group, gives us the recommendations with each of these groups.
“These are teams with tradition and experience, which need a lot of attention and commitment“, emphasizes Perdikos and continues: “As in any game, our goal will be to limit each team’s strengths and adapt to the things they are trying to achieve through their style of play. Of course, we have a picture of all the teams from the qualifying windows, but very important are the preparation games they will play, as the picture of a team that has 2-3 days of preparation in the qualifying windows is very different compared to this one which he has when there is a month to prepare for an event”.
First “stop” for Greece, Montenegro: “This is a strong team, which eliminated us from the group stage in the previous EuroBasket. He goes down full in this event, having even changed a foreign one. In the qualifiers they had the image of a very good defensive team, who shoot well from the three-point range and have offensive rebounding ability. Their main players are coming off very good individual years. Points of reference are expected to be Dublijevic, Jovanovic and whichever of the two foreign athletes the coach has invited is finally selected in the 12th round».
Greece’s second opponent in time will be Latvia: “Latvia will be weaned off the retired Elina Babkina and will be expected to rely on Steinberga and the amazing shooter Laksa. The style of play in terms of offensive speed, few mistakes and quick executions will likely be affected by the change to the 1 position. We expect a lot of execution from the three-point and in general Steinberga will be a point of reference in the offense taking a lot of balls in the low post or as creator or executor».
Last opponent in the group, Spain, a team with great tradition and many solutions: “Spain needs no special recommendations in terms of its quality and ability. They go down with one absence, Durr, who is a long body that covered the basket, but her place is set to be taken by the talented Carrera who is coming off a terrific year with Valencia. The experienced Torrens, Dominguez and Uvina together with the younger athletes, such as Conte and Kathorla, create a balanced and very high-quality ensemble. We expect to face a lot of P&R, and an uptempo attacking game».
