May 17 is the world day against homophobia and Ligue 1 had decided that teams would wear jerseys with numbers on colors of the LGBT communitywhile the captains would wear the corresponding armband in the matches of the 35th matchday.
Although most teams and footballers welcomed the initiative, some reacted, leading to the Marseille captain, Valentine Ronzier in relevant statements.
As he said, “It’s a complicated situation. I don’t know what goes on inside the players’ heads, what kind of education do they have, what did they put in their minds. They need to understand that it’s not like going to the Pride parade. It’s also a matter of communication.
What we are saying is that we have to crack down on homophobia because there are injustices and people are attacked or killed because they are gay. This cannot happen in 2023. That is where we have to focus, on the idea to strike at injustice.
We all knew there was going to be a race dedicated to the LGBT community, agreeing or disagreeing is one thing, but we don’t tell them to go to the parade as well at the streets. It’s just a shirt.”
Marseille captain Valentin Rongier criticizes players who refused to wear rainbow shirt:
“We’re not exactly asking them to go march at Gay Pride. It’s just to say that we need to fight homophobia because there are injustices.”https://t.co/3Y44D53HEJ
