Huge performance for Gael Monfils, who achieved an incredible turnaround in his country and left the Argentinian Sebastian Baez out of the game.
The French tennis player at the age of 36 made a very strong start and took a 2-1 set lead (3-6.6-3,7-5). In the fourth set he was down 1-6 and all seemed lost in the final set where he found himself trailing 0-4.
The 36-year-old Monfis, however, had the mental reserves to come back and turn the game around. He leveled the match (4-4) and even broke two in a row to achieve the big upset, 7-5 and make his compatriots in the stands celebrate in a match that lasted 3 hours and 47 minutes.
After his epic return he experienced apotheosis and burst into tears, lying in the dirt of Philippe Chatrier.

“It’s definitely in the two best matches of my life. I had almost the same match a few years ago with Pablo Cuevas at Suzanne Lenglen. It was an equally incredible atmosphere. Of course this has another advantage. I’m older now and I had less chance to win the match. It was a great atmosphere,” said Monfils in his remarks after the match.
The next opponent for the 36-year-old Frenchman is Holger Rune, who prevailed with a 3-1 set against Christopher Eubanks.
