Evanthia-Irini Bournia took first place in women’s class 1 at the ITTF Al-Watani Para Championships 2023 which started on Thursday and will conclude next Saturday in Amman.
Maybe a month ago he didn’t have the opportunity to compete on Greek soil in the second international Open A.Me.A. of Kefalonia because her category did not have enough entries, however she came back completely ready for her competitive duties and, under the instructions of the federal coach, Eleftheria Daundakis, she achieved success.
In fact, she was first favorite and confirmed her role with very good performances and without being particularly threatened.
Class 1 began and ended on Thursday with four matches and a single group played on a one-for-all basis. Bournia, who in June maintains her position at number 4 in the world ranking of women’s class 1, occupied the top not only with the absolute of victories, but without losing a set.
In the first round she defeated Indian Ekta Biyan 3-0 sets (11-4, 11-5, 11-1) and then defeated Anfai Altoufairi from Kuwait 3-0 (11-1, 11-4 , 11-2) and Mariam Almirisl from Saudi Arabia with the same score (11-4, 11-2, 11-2).
Let’s remember that in last year’s corresponding tournament in Jordan, the later “bronze” world champion had won the silver medal in singles, while in general the Greek team had reached the podium four times.
