On the same day that our group celebrates its 100th anniversary, it also celebrates 18 years of administrative leadership by Giorgos Spanos.
On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, our Intrepid turned a century old, but every May 31 is significant for another reason.
May 31, 2005 was also the day when the course, fate and perspective of Atromitos changed completely, because officially the fortunes of our beloved team passed to the until now major shareholder of PAE, George Spanos, completely changing the course of history.
Coming to today, Giorgos Spanos has fortunately completed 18 years of presence at the helm and apart from being the longest-serving administrative leader in the history of Atromitos, he is undoubtedly also the most successful, a fact that is not only commonly accepted by all of Greece’s sports fans, but is something which the numbers also show.
Just from the first year of his administrative leadership, Atromitos finished in 7th place under coach Giorgos Paraschos, which gives him the right to participate in the UEFA qualifiers, an event that has now been renamed the Europa League. Our team faced the team that even now is synonymous with success in this competition, Sevilla, and history was also recorded, with Giorgos Korakakis achieving the first European goal in our team’s history, in the defeat (1-2 ) at the stadium of Rizoupoli.
In this course, there were clearly unfortunate moments, with the highlight being the relegation to the second national team in the 2007/08 season, however this event was also the “weapon” so that Atromitos not only immediately returned to the top division (and even with scoring record with the then format of the category), but to come back stronger than ever.
Coached by Giorgos Donis from 2009 to 2012, “Asteri” lays the very strong foundations to establish itself as an entity in the Super League and at the same time shocks the whole of Greek football, when it creates an unprecedented reality for our microcosm, since Atromitos reached the Cup final two years in a row (2011, 2012). In fact, the 2011/12 season turns out to be the best so far, since our team finishes in 4th place, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.
Atromitos has now established itself as a team whose vision is upwards and not downwards. The 2012/13 season may have turned out to be a ‘Scottish shower’ with many ups and downs in performance and results, but in the end it ends with Atromitos finishing 3rd, being the only team to break the dominance of the majors, coming within a breath of the Champions League qualifiers.
Until the 2014/15 season, Atromitos continuously finished in 4th place, an achievement rather unattainable for any other team that has not won a title in Greece, while in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons under the technical guidance of Damir Canadi, our team again “dazzles” with its football, finishing in the 4th place of the Super League, leaving the feeling that its course could be even higher.
Coming to today, Atromitos under the management of Giorgos Spanos who completed 18 years of presence in Peristeri, is experiencing his peak moments, preparing for his 18th appearance in the top division in his 19th season, with our team reaching a total of 23.

Once in 3rd place (2012/13)
Five times in 4th place (2011/12, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2017/18, 2018/19)
In the Greek Cup:
Two Cup finals (2011, 2012) and two other semi-final appearances (2008, 2016)
In Europe:
Seven European appearances (2006/07, 2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2018/19, 2019/20)
However, apart from the competitive achievements, during the tenure of Giorgos Spanos, Atromitos has to be proud of his “home”, which is none other than the training center in Mazarakis. The modern facilities combined with the latest technology equipment are a guarantee of success for the coming years.
Our team’s training center has facilities that are considered a luxury in many other teams in the division, however, for Atromitos it is the dream of a lifetime that he lives every day since 2007 and of which he can be proud, to the point that even the National team has been accommodated for her coaching duties.
For the rehabilitation of the football players, there is a state-of-the-art and pioneering spa for Greece with swimming pool, sauna, hammam, jacuzzi and cryotherapy.
