Gran Canaria… put itself out of the Euroleague!
With a statement issued on Monday night (12/06), the Spanish team announced its decision not to take part in the Euroleague of the new season, due to financial problems that plague the club.
Let’s remember how Jaka Lakovic had secured her return to the top European competition, after which winning this year’s EuroCup on her Turk Telecom.
Now, it remains to be seen how the EuroLeague itself will move, i.e. if it gives the place of Gran Canaria to the finalist of the EuroCup, or, decides to fill the gap through wild card.
Gran Canaria’s announcement in detail:
“Gran Canaria decided not to play in the Euroleague for financial reasons.
This afternoon an extraordinary meeting of the team’s Board of Directors was held to evaluate the report it collected and to vote on the possible participation of the first team in the Euroleague.
After analyzing the situation and taking a vote, the Board of Directors unanimously decided not to participate in the next edition of the Euroleague for financial reasons and to play the Eurocup again.”
