The Real Madrid goalkeeper felt insulted after his decision Domenico Tedesco to hand over the captain’s armband for the upcoming (20/6) clash with Estonia, opting to sit himself out.
The Belgium national team coach took a stand on the matter in his pre-match press conference, stressing that he was shocked by Courtois’ decision and stressing that he continues to love him as a footballer as well as a person.
“We had decided that Lukaku would be the captain in the game against Austria and Courtois in the one against Estonia. After our last match, Courtois suddenly wanted to talk to me and told me that he was going back home because he was disappointed and offended.”he initially reported and went on to say:
“I am surprised and shocked by his decision. We did not expect such a reaction. Since March we have agreed that De Bruyne will be the first captain and Lukaku, Courtois vice-captains. From the beginning I tried to show Courtois the recognition he deserves. I love him, both as a goalkeeper and as a person. But I am shocked by his decision”.
