Following the example of the European domestic Cups, the NBA establishes from the new season for the first time a separate tournament that will take place within the season, parallel to the regular season and will be called NBA Cup.
The teams were divided into 6 groups of 5 teams (3 groups in the East and 3 groups in the West) with the capacity groups determined by last year’s rankings. So in the East, the three teams with the best record in the region last year, Bucks, Celtics and Sixers, entered the first capacity group, the teams that finished 4-6 (Cavaliers, Knicks, Nets) entered the second group, and so on.
The resulting groups were the following:
Group 1: Sixers, Cavaliers, Hawks, Pacers, Pistons
Group 2: Bucks, Knicks, Heat, Wizards, Hornets
Group 3: Celtics, Nets, Raptors, Bulls, Magic
Group 4: Grizzlies, Suns, Lakers, Jazz, Blazers
Group 5: Nuggets, Clippers, Pelicans, Mavericks, Rockets
Group 6: Kings, Warriors, Wolves, Thunder, Spurs
The conduct system
Each team will play four matches in the group stage – one against each opponent ie: Two at home and two away. The games are part of the regular season and will be played in November, Tuesdays and Fridays. The winner of each group (3 from East and 3 from West) will advance to the quarterfinals. Two more teams will make up the eight, one from the East and one from the West, based on who had the best win-loss percentage in the group stage, not their position.
The quarter-final stage will take place over the two days of December 4-5, with the matches taking place at the venues of the teams with the best record. Then it will follow Final 4, the two days of December 7-9 in Las Vegas. The final will be held on December 9.
The players of the team that wins the trophy will receive $500,000 each. The players of the team that will reach the final will receive $200,000 each. Players from teams that reach the semifinals will receive $100,000 and players from teams that reach the quarterfinals will receive $50,000.
